Behaviors

Three quantizer channels with different specialities Route a melody or random CV into CH N IN

All three channels share the same scale / mode. Channel 1 has A/B-switch (auto-selects one of two note sets on alternating beats for 'root-on-1 walking bass' feel). Channel 2 FILL1–5 expose the five non-scale notes for chromatic access / major-minor flips. Channel 3 EQ-DIST equidistantly maps allowed notes across the input octave — critical when quantizing LFOs or random voltages.

Four-voice chord generator Select any of ROOT, 3RD, 5TH, 7TH, 9TH, 11TH, 13TH in the CHORDS section; voices patched to OUT 1–4

The first four lit interval buttons map to OUT1–4. Fewer than four lit → some voices double. More than four lit → only the first four are played. INV cycles through inversions (root / 1st / 2nd / 3rd). SPREAD knob opens voices across octaves. 98 possible voicings. Sus chords automatically remap 3RD button to 4th.

Eight-pattern arpeggiator Patch clock to ARP CLK and voice to ARP OUT; select scale-note buttons

Patterns: Up, Down, Up/Down, Down/Up, Baroque (2 forward, 1 back), Octaves (each note twice — once octaved up), Brownian (random by single step), Random. BEGIN forces reset to a specific interval on each chord change. Built-in clock divider/multiplier (1/4 to 4/1, incl. triplet 3/2) on the arp clock.

Chord progression sequencer Press SEQ; clock into CLK jack

16 songs × 4 parts (A–D) × 32 steps. Each step stores root, degree, mode, beats (1–128), all 52 button states and all five octave switches. Clock divider 1–64 per part. ADD copies current step; DEL deletes; +/− BEATS tweak step length. Songs auto-save.

Chord progression sequencer — live mode Press SYNC (Arpeggio) on the SONG page

'Buttons + Octaves are Live' makes button and octave changes immediate rather than overwriting the current step. The knob values still auto-save. Essential for improvising on top of a locked progression without scrambling stored steps.

Freeze mode (hidden) Double-click the play/pause button

Current chord and scale freeze. ROOT / DEGREE / MODE knobs and buttons only affect the display — no audible change. Lets a performer pre-dial the next section silently, then exit freeze to drop it live.

Input & output matrices Press OCT, then GATE 2

4×4 input mixer (adds pitch from CH1/2/3/Arp IN jacks into any channel, with 2-octave subtract) and 4×4 output switch (each OUT jack reads exactly one quantizer). Unlocks voice swaps, unison plays and polyphonic routings impossible to build from external modules.

Soft vs true bypass per channel 13TH in OCT page toggles CH 1/2/3 bypass state

Normal → quantize · Soft Bypass (dim): raw pitch passes but transpose, chaotic detune, pitch bend and 'IN-follows-ROOT' still apply · Off (true bypass): 1:1 ADC→DAC pass-through with ~2mV precision — effectively a high-precision buffer.

IN follows ROOT Per-section button (FILL/FILL1/13TH/SLEW/DIR) on OCT page

Automatically shifts the input pitch by the musical distance from C to the current root, so a bass sequence stays shaped around the new chord. Shifts of 7 semitones+ octave down instead of up.

Chaotic Detune / Chaotic Note Shuffle Assign CV 1–4 to function

Chaotic Detune: bipolar, detunes all eight pitch outputs independently up to 1 semitone — audio-rate modulation (1kHz update) produces disharmonic 'drunk-orchestra' motion. Chaotic Note Shuffle shuffles the 12 semitones within each octave globally for controlled dissonance.

Harmonic Shift Assign CV 1–4 or POT 1/2 to Harmonic Shift

Progressively strips harmonic complexity: at 0V all intervals allowed, 0.7V removes FILL notes, 1.4V 11th, 2.1V 13th, 2.9V 9th, 3.6V 7th, 4.3V leaves root+5th, 5.0V forces root only. Negative voltages remove in reverse order.

Non-equal temperaments Menu → Intonation

Switch globally between Equal, Just and Quarter-comma Meantone. Just retunes automatically when the root note changes — unique to Sinfonion and unavailable from any standalone quantizer.

Tuning Mode TUNE button

Forces all eight outputs to a selectable octave C (1V steps from -2V/C0 to 8V/C8). Octave switches are honoured; CVs that modify pitch are suppressed. Use to calibrate external VCOs against Sinfonion's 16-bit DACs.

Super-Sinfonion sync Set OUT 1 on master to 'Sync Master'; IN 1 on slave(s) to 'Sync Slave'; cable master OUT1 → slave IN1

Serial link (115200 bps) sends ROOT / DEGREE / MODE / TRANS / Chaotic Detune and sequencer clock+reset over a single patch cable. Unlimited slaves via mult. Slave sequencer disables; master drives the chord/scale everyone plays in. Display shows 'Sync: alive'.

Autogates and output triggers Menu → OUT 1/2 → 'Chan X Autogate' etc.

OUT 1/2 fires a 10ms trigger whenever a quantizer actually outputs a new semitone — great for re-triggering envelopes only on note changes. Also available: Arpeggio Beat, Sequencer Clock / Beat / Song-Step / Song-Reset.

Global MODE Picks the musical mode. Chord-building modes (Chords, Chords2, Slashch) map buttons to jazz functions; scale modes (Major, Minor, Mel.Minor, Har.Minor, Har.Major, Db.H.Maj) map buttons to degrees.
8 modes · stored per sequencer step
Global TRANS Global transposition in semitones. Applies to every pitch output.
±12 semitones · noon = 0 · dedicated CV also available
Global PRESET Selects one of 16 button presets in non-sequenced mode; becomes the song selector when SEQ is on.
16 positions · CV-assignable
Global SLEW Master slew / portamento time. Per-section enable via SLEW buttons or IN 1/2.
Linear or exponential curve (menu) · CV attenuates when patched
Assign POT 1 / POT 2 Two assignable knobs routable to 28 CV functions — e.g. Harmonic Shift, Chaotic Detune, Song select, per-channel Pre-Transpose.
