Behaviors

Human programming tap channel button ≥2 times

Tap a channel button at the rate you want that channel to run. TEMPI compares to Leading Tempo and derives multiplier/divisor automatically. Resolution (100/50/25%) set on Program Edit page — 100% for strict integer ratios, 25% for free/loose relationships.

Machine programming (divisor) hold PGM_A + tap channel button N times

Programs channel to ÷N of Leading Tempo. N counts taps (max 32). Hold PGM_A + press PGM_B secondary for double divisor (÷2^y). Multi-channel: tap multiple channel buttons while holding PGM_A.

Machine programming (multiplier) hold PGM_B + tap channel button N times

Programs channel to ×N of Leading Tempo. PGM_B adds MULT mode. Hold PGM_B + press PGM_A secondary for double multiplier. Fine increments/decrements: hold channel + tap PGM_A (slower) or PGM_B (faster).

Phase programming press PGM_A + PGM_B simultaneously

Enters Phase page. Hold PGM_A + tap channel N times for coarse phase decrement (1 cycle of Leading Tempo per N). PGM_B for coarse increment. Holding channel button + PGM_A/B gives fine phase (¼ cycle) adjustments.

States and Banks hold PGM_A + PGM_B → State Edit page

Stores up to 64 timing scenarios in 4 Banks of 16. Recall, store, copy, paste and Mutate operations available. State LED color indicates Bank (Blue/Orange/Pink/White). Nothing is saved across power cycles without explicit Store.

Shift mode Mod-enable channels + Mod gate → high

On Mod gate rising edge, Clock values are rotated between Mod-enabled channels (purple). Direction set by Button 4 (CW/CCW/Random). Returns to original values on State change. Creates evolving rhythmic variations without reprogramming.

Run/Stop modes Mod-enable channels + Mod gate as run/stop

Run/Stop (red): Mod-enabled channels run on gate high. Run/Stop All (blue, 'James Cigler'): all channels run/stop; enabled channels preserve phase, disabled reset in phase. Alt Run/Stop (purple, 'Robert A.A. Lowe'): inverse logic. Mod input toggled or momentary (Button 6).

Mute press PGM_A to enter Mute page

Tap channel buttons to mute/unmute. Muted = red. Mutes are not Shifted (a trick: muted via large division = shiftable mute). New clocks can be programmed into muted channels — useful for cueing changes in performance.

Retrigger blocking / integer masking Mod gate as integer of Leading Tempo → Run/Stop

When Mod input signal is an integer division of Leading Tempo (e.g. 1/1, 1/2, 1/4), Run/Stop can also act as a channel Reset that preserves phase with Leading Tempo — useful for compositional structure.

Select Bus follower Bank Edit → Button 3 → Follow

Set TEMPI to Follow Select Bus messages from a René (Make Noise) or Macro Machines Storage Strip. TEMPI receives State changes, Store, Multi-Paste and Mesh operations over the INT.CV bus line. Tempo LED turns green when Following.

Tap Tempo from Channel 1 Clock Edit → Button 4 enables Leading Tap Tempo

When enabled, tapping Channel 1 Button sets Leading Tempo. When disabled, State Select Combo Pot/CV becomes Leading Tempo control. Button 2-6 switches per-channel clock width between 50% duty cycle (blue) and 10ms trigger (off).

Internal delay when clock rate changes external tempo change

When Leading Tempo changes rate, TEMPI needs 2 clock pulses to re-measure and lock. For DAW sync, include ~2 bars of silence at the start of a song to allow lock-in. Or use Run/Stop All for DAW-reliable start.

Controls

Global Channel Buttons 1-6 Tap to program multiples/divisions (Human programming). Hold combos with PGM_A/B for Machine programming and phase editing. Button LEDs flash to indicate current Clock. Colors encode state: blue=active, red=muted, purple=mod-enabled, pink=muted+mod.

Global PGM_A / PGM_B Program buttons. Hold + tap channel buttons to set Divisor/Multiplier values. Double-press for edit pages (Bank Edit, Program Edit, Clock Edit).
DIV (PGM_A) · MULT (PGM_B)
State State Select (Combo Pot) Selects active State 1-16 within current Bank. Acts as attenuator for State Select CV when patched. When Tap Tempo is disabled becomes Leading Tempo control.
combo pot · 0V-5V

I/O

IN · 4

  • External Leading Tempo ≥1.5V · ≥6ms wide CLK
Clock input. TEMPI follows after 2 pulses to measure rate. Primary clock source.
  • State Select Gate ≥2.5V gate GATE
Increments State on rising edge. When Shift mode on, this input triggers Shift instead.
  • State Select CV 0V – 5V GATE
Absolute State selection. Takes priority over State Select Gate. 0V-5V maps across 16 States of current Bank.
  • Mod Gate ≥2.5V gate GATE
Triggers Shift and/or Run/Stop for Mod-enabled channels (purple). Behavior set in Program Edit page.

OUT · 1

  • CH 1-6 Outputs 0V / 8V CLK
Six independent clock outputs — each a programmable multiple/division/phase-offset of Leading Tempo. Default 50% duty cycle; switchable to 10ms triggers per channel (Clock Edit).
