Instant S&H random melody
Use the normaled TRIG IN to get a synced random stepped voltage and quantize LFO 4 into a playable scale at the same time.
Walkthrough
  1. Set LFO 1 Range to I (slow) and Rate to about 9 o'clock — this sets the step speed of the S&H via normalisation.
  2. Leave TRIG IN unpatched so LFO 1's square wave clocks the S&H stage.
  3. Leave S&H IN unpatched so the internal noise is the source.
  4. Set LFO 4 Wave Select to sine and LFO 4 Rate to about noon.
  5. Set the LFO 4 Uni/Bipolar switch to unipolar (0-7V) so the pitch CV stays positive.
  6. Patch a ~2-3V offset (e.g. a second LFO at slow rate or a fixed voltage) into QNT CV to pick a scale like pentatonic minor.
  7. Patch Total Sub LFO 4 OUT -> VCO 1V/oct.
  8. Patch Total Sub S&H OUT -> Filter Cutoff.
  9. Patch your gate source -> VCA CV to hear notes.
Signal out LFO 4 OUT — quantized pitch CV (0-7V) into VCO 1V/oct. S&H OUT — stepped random 0-7V into filter cutoff.
Listen for A slow random melody in the chosen scale, with the filter tone changing in stepped bursts on every LFO 1 square edge. Turn LFO 1 Rate up to speed up both the notes and the filter steps.

Clock-locked drum brain with ratchets
Lock Total Sub to an external clock and fan the divider plus ratcheting LFO 4 gates out to drum voices.
Walkthrough
  1. Patch your master clock -> Total Sub EXT CLOCK IN. The internal engine auto-hands over.
  2. Patch a trigger at bar 1 -> Total Sub CLOCK DIV RESET so the divider stays phase-locked.
  3. Set LFO 4 Wave Select to square and LFO 4 Rate to match the clock feel (LFO 4 still drives internal gate logic even on external clock).
  4. Patch Total Sub CLK /4 -> Kick Trigger.
  5. Patch Total Sub CLK /8 -> Snare Trigger.
  6. Patch Total Sub CLK /16 -> Hat Trigger (this tap exposes the hidden gate sequencer variations).
  7. Patch a slow LFO from elsewhere -> Total Sub DEPTH CV to modulate ratcheting density on the gate output.
  8. Optionally patch Total Sub S&H OUT -> Hat pitch or decay for stepped variation.
Signal out CLK /4, CLK /8, CLK /16 — gate outputs clocking drum voices. CLK /16 carries the ratcheted/sequenced variant.
Listen for A locked 4/4 groove where the kick and snare stay rock-steady but the hats morph between straight 16ths, ratchets and gate breaks as the DEPTH CV rises and falls. CLOCK DIV RESET at bar 1 keeps everything in phase.

Four-layer drone modulation
Use all four LFOs at different speeds on different destinations of a drone voice for constantly shifting timbre.
Walkthrough
  1. Hold a note on your VCO and run it through a filter and VCA.
  2. Set LFO 1 Range to I and Rate fully CCW for a very slow sweep.
  3. Set LFO 2 Wave to triangle, Rate at about 10 o'clock (medium-slow).
  4. Set LFO 3 Rate at about noon.
  5. Set LFO 4 Wave to triangle, Uni/Bipolar to bipolar, and Rate at about 2 o'clock.
  6. Patch Total Sub LFO 1 OUT -> VCA CV for a slow swell.
  7. Patch Total Sub LFO 2 OUT -> Filter Cutoff.
  8. Patch Total Sub LFO 3 OUT -> VCO FM or detune input for subtle wobble.
  9. Patch Total Sub LFO 4 OUT -> Filter Resonance or a wavefolder amount.
  10. Optional: patch LFO 4 OUT -> PHASE CV for self-wave-shaping.
Signal out Four LFO outputs feeding four independent parameters of a drone voice simultaneously.
Listen for A drone that breathes on four time-scales at once — a very slow volume tide, a medium filter sweep, a faint pitch vibrato and a faster timbral ripple. Patching LFO 4 back into PHASE CV makes the ripple warp its own shape.

Behaviors

Four independent LFOs plus dual random module powered

LFO 1 (multi-wave, two ranges), LFO 2 (tri/sq switch), LFO 3 (OTA triangle), LFO 4 (six-wave with DSP shaping), plus S&H-with-noise and a second stepped/smoothed random source — all running simultaneously.

S&H trigger normaled to LFO 1 nothing patched into TRIG IN

When TRIG IN is empty, LFO 1's square wave clocks the S&H stage, so S&H OUT produces a synced random stepped voltage right out of the box. Patch any trigger into TRIG IN to override.

External clock auto-detect signal present at EXT CLOCK IN

EXT CLOCK IN auto-replaces LFO 4 as the master clock for the divider and hidden gate sequencer; unpatch and LFO 4 takes back over seamlessly.

LFO 4 wave-shaping via PHASE CV CV patched to PHASE CV with sine/triangle LFO 4 output

PHASE CV introduces phase modulation on LFO 4 — dramatic wave-shaping when LFO 4 is on sine or triangle; subtle on saw/ramp; barely audible on square.

Curve quantizer (8 scales) 0-5V CV into QNT CV with LFO 4 running

QNT CV steps LFO 4's waveform through 8 scale quantizations (chromatic, major, minor, pent. major/minor, blues, dorian, whole tone). Sweeping another LFO into QNT CV walks between quantizations, giving randomised pitched CV.

Hidden gate sequencer + VC ratcheting CLK /16 (or divider taps) with DEPTH CV modulation

The clock divider drives an internal gate sequencer with musical pattern variations — modulating DEPTH CV voltage-controls ratcheting rates and gate breaks, turning plain divisions into evolving rhythmic patterns.

VC clock multiplier CV into MULTIPLY CV

MULTIPLY CV multiplies the engine's speed roughly 2x, 4x, up to 8x, usable for fills, accents and tempo-swept modulation without re-patching.
