Behaviors

Echo / Loop / Sample modes MODES button

ECHO: four playback heads + one record head, four-tap delay. LOOP: head 4 becomes the sound-on-sound loop head, heads 1–3 remain delays of the incoming signal; FEEDBACK 4 must be ON for loop to play. SAMPLE: head 4 becomes phrase-sampler playhead, triggered by RESTART; tap to record, tap again to stop, third tap clears.

Self-oscillation as oscillator SPEED/PITCH CCW · REPEATS 100% · brief tap

Tape loop collapses into a high-quality sine. Press INFINITE to lock the pitch; SPEED still responds as 1V/oct over ~6 octaves (combining SPEED knob range with SPEED CV ±3V). Tape-mechanics knobs color the oscillation; an input signal cross-modulates it.

Zero-latency suboctave SHIFT head mode + GATE to RESTART

SHIFT mode sets head 3 to half-speed (-1 octave). Sending a note gate to RESTART CV realigns the SHIFT pointers on every note-on, yielding a tight -1 octave from head 3 with no perceivable latency. Level via PLAYBACK LEVEL 3.

Pitch quantize scales hold TAP

Restricts SPEED/PITCH to musical intervals across 15 scales (Pentatonic, Minor Blues, modes, Harmonic Minor, Whole Tone, Harmonic Series, Chromatic). SPEED CV is quantized to semitones. Hold TRANSPORT and turn SPEED/PITCH to scroll scales; FEEDBACK/TRANSPORT LEDs show selection.

Phase-aligned clock outs CLK IN patched

CLK 1–4 OUT emit 50%-duty clocks at each head's rhythmic subdivision and stay phase-aligned with incoming CLK IN or TAP. In EVEN: 16th/8th/dotted-8th/quarter. In TRIPLET: triplet variants. In SHIFT: 333ms/500ms/2000ms/1000ms at 1s quarter. CLK 4 becomes loop-length clock in LOOP/SAMPLE.

Custom per-head panning PAN = CENTER · hold FEEDBACK N + turn PLAYBACK LEVEL N

With PAN switched to CENTER, holding a head's FEEDBACK button while turning that head's PLAYBACK LEVEL knob sets its pan (L / center / R). Lets any stereo placement of the four heads be dialed by hand; all-centered produces a psychoacoustic stereo image.

Send/Return loop cable in SEND and RETURN

SEND outputs summed input + delay repeats pre record-head; RETURN feeds back into record head. Patching both inserts external FX in the feedback path — summed to mono inside Magneto, though the dry output retains stereo. Reverb / filter / waveshaper here for evolving delay feedback.

Dual split mode DIP S2 ON (rear)

Splits Magneto into a mono 4-head tape delay on LEFT IN/OUT and an independent mono spring reverb on RIGHT IN/OUT. Two unrelated effects in one module; requires rack pull to toggle the DIP.

Momentary vs latch transport power up while holding a transport button

Each transport function (INFINITE, REVERSE, RESTART, PAUSE) can be set independently to momentary (red flash) or latch (green flash) at boot. CV inputs follow the same assignment (gate vs trigger). RESTART is always trigger-only.

Pause with mechanical slowdown PAUSE engaged

Stops tape with mechanical slowdown/startup ramp. Ramp time is set by PLAYBACK LEVEL 4 while TRANSPORT+PAUSE are active (both red). With TAPE AGE + CRINKLE high this produces a convincing dying-tape stop.

Scrub audio when paused PAUSE on · move SPEED/PITCH

A ~1-foot scrub buffer of recent tape is addressable by the SPEED/PITCH knob while paused. Length of scrub material depends on the speed at the moment of pause — slower speeds capture more audio in the buffer.
